The
City of Bainbridge Island encompasses the entire island
and has a population of about 22,000 residents. The island
is 9 miles long and about 4 miles wide at the widest point.
The Washington State Ferry system provides direct transportation
to Seattle on a regular schedule and the Agate Pass Bridge
at the north end of the island gives access to the Kitsap
and Olympic Peninsulas by auto.
Bainbridge Island - Seattle
Ferry
The “downtown core” of Winslow provides
islanders and visitors necessary products and services,
as well as gifts, antiques and outstanding restaurants.
The island has many artists and crafts persons who do
a variety of mediums. There are galleries and studios
where their work is showcased. The Bainbridge Island
Downtown Association and the Bainbridge Island Chamber
of Commerce, as well as other local organizations,
provide numerous family activitiesthroughout the year.
In the
old days when transportation needs of islanders were
met only by the “Mosquito
Fleet” ferries,
communities were built up around the various ferry docks.
Names such as Seabold, Manzanita, Crystal Springs,
Fletcher Bay, South Beach, Port Blakely, Rolling Bay
and others still exist today to denote various neighborhoods
on the island though the docks and pilings have long
since disappeared.
Bainbridge Island is surrounded by the waters of Puget
Sound with views of the Olympics to the west and the
Cascades to the east. Mt, Rainier stands as a sentinel
to the south and Mt. Baker guards the view to the
north. It is a unique community within a 30 minute
ferry ride to Seattle. Where else will you find
Frog Rock?
